Annual. This slow-bolting strain is grown primarily for it’s broad, deep green, celery-like, pungent foliage. Used in Oriental and Mexican cuisine. Cilantro can be used in most Italian, Indian and Mexican foods such as sauces and salsa. Cilantro requires at least 1 inch of water per week. Summer Savory is a wonderful heirloom variety with good old-fashioned taste. A native, annual, herb from the Mediterranean/Central Europe area. The slender, pointy, slightly hairy leaves are nicely fragrant, fresh or dried, and grow on reddish colored stems with lavender pink flowers. Bushy plants grow up to 2 feet tall and work very well in containers or inside pots. It has multi medicinal uses and is even used as an aphrodisiac. Summer savory is widely renowned as a culinary herb with a smoother flavor then Winter Savory and similar to marjoram, but unique to itself. Originally introduced to England from the Mediterranean, it quickly took its place along with thyme, marjoram and basil. Indeed, it was one of the herbs that Charlemagne specifically ordered planted in his own royal garden. There are two major types of savory in common cultivation, winter and summer savory. Summer savory is lighter in flavor, but still has the characteristic minty-peppery flavor that is peculiar to the species. It has been used medicinally as well as for cooking. The Greeks, for instance, used it to treat earaches and toothaches, and Roman midwives used it as an all purpose disinfectant. According to ancient Greek lore, Pliny the Elder gave it the name satureja, which is a derivative of the word satyr. This was because satyrs were thought to have lived in fields of savory; this also implies that the herb itself was why the satyrs’ were so “passionate”, or so the Greeks thought. Whether or not it’s true, there’s no doubt that summer savory has earned its place in the culinary annals.

It reaches a height of less than three feet and has a sweet hay scent when dried. A native of the Mediterranean area, the seeds have been used for thousands of years for medicinal purposes. It is one of the oldest known medicinal plants and dates back to ancient Egypt, where archaeological evidence suggests that Egyptians used it as a food, as a medicine and in their embalming process. Likewise, the Greeks and Romans considered it a valuable food and medicine and used it to remedy sore throats and colds and also considered it an effective aphrodisiac. The Romans gave Fenugreek its botanical specific, foenum-graecum, which is Latin for “Greek hay,” as it was a well-known fodder crop for animals. Fenugreek has been cultivated for medicinal use in China, India, Morocco and Turkey, where seeds have been used as a potent antioxidant with beneficial effects on the liver and pancreas.
